Giving up smoking remains the best way for smokers to live longer

Giving up smoking reduces people's chances of dying from chronic diseases including smoking related lung diseases, cardiovascular disease and smoking-related cancers the New Zealand Ministry of Health says.

Chief Advisor Public Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, says chronic lung disease is a serious side effect of smoking and can be debilitating and even fatal. This new study shows that microscopic inflammatory changes seem to persist in smokers with chronic lung disease. But more importantly, as the authors also point out, quitting increases survival, reduces hospital admissions and reduces the rate of decline in lung function. These are likely to be the outcomes that matter to smokers.

Teen smokers wouldn't smoke if they had their life again

Preliminary New Zealand Ministry of Health research indicates that almost three quarters of 15-19 year olds who currently smoke say that if they had their life again they would not smoke.

"Our research shows about 85 per cent of these young smokers believe they won't be smokers in their 20s. Unfortunately, the evidence suggests many will continue to smoke for many more years, some for the rest of their lives. Smoking tobacco is incredibly addictive and this finding sends a clear message to any young person thinking of taking up smoking - don't, or you will regret it,'' Dr Bloomfield says.

Dr Bloomfield says by creating smokefree environments for their children parents can help their children avoid the poor health and early death that can result from smoking.

Tobacco Free on World No Tobacco Day

Every Day More than 4,000 Youth Try Their First Cigarette

Tobacco Free Florida is celebrating World No Tobacco Day by encouraging youth to pledge that they will remain tobacco free and tobacco users to quit for good.

"By taking the 'I Care' pledge, youth choose to abstain from all forms of tobacco use, allowing them to serve as positive role models in their family and friends' lives, not to mention society as a whole," says Kim Berfield, Deputy Secretary of the Florida Department of Health. "It is crucial that youth recognize the importance of claiming their right to health and healthy living by avoiding cigarettes and smokeless tobacco."

Children and teenagers make up 90% of the new smokers in the United States and each day, more than 4,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 17 try their first cigarette. Another 1,140 become regular, daily smokers and of those, about a third will die from a smoking-related disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the younger one begins to smoke, the more likely they will become an adult smoker. Young people who do not start using tobacco by age 18 will most likely never start.

"A toxic pollutant spread by oil spills, forest fires and car exhaust is also present in cigarette smoke, and may represent a second way in which smoking delays bone healing, according to research presented at the annual meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society in San Francisco (March 2008).

In 2005, researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center identified one ingredient in smoke, nicotine, that delays bone growth by influencing gene expression in the two-step bone healing process: stem cells become cartilage; cartilage matures into bone. In the current study, some of the same researchers found that a second smoke ingredient, the polyaromatic hydrocarbon benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), also slows bone healing, but in a different way.

Smoking has been shown to delay skeletal healing by as much as 60 percent following fractures. Slower healing means a greater chance of re-injury and can lead to chronic pain and disability. The obvious solution is for smokers to quit when they get hurt ..."
